I’m too old for a gallery, says owner from a Paris gallery. Dear colleagues, what do you think ?

I’m too old for a gallery owner from Paris.

What an insult and what a compliment at the same time. Because then I wouldn’t be able to produce as much and as quickly. I personally think two or three paintings per week is a decent production, but who the hell am I? My experience with the style I’m creating now is that people are very enthusiastic about it and even buy my paintings. My idea is to keep it affordable, but also to make some money from it. Even younger people like it and would be interested in buying it or placing an order. Now, I think my prices are fair, but I also realize that a painting is an average weekly wage for some people. And I think I should keep it that way. Of course, I want to make money, but I also want ordinary, hard-working people to be able to buy art. The gallery owner from Paris told a great buyer of two of my paintings that I should develop them with AI and then have them printed (I have my reservations about that) because I want the people who buy my work to have an original, not a copy. Maybe I’m being too idealistic, but I think it’s already quite remarkable that it’s going so well. I’ve even offered young interested parties the chance to pay for my work in two or three installments.I feel so honored that all these people are so interested in my work and style that I think I should continue this way. Or should I listen to that gallery owner in Paris and have my work copied and printed? Something inside me tells me I should continue as I am now.The gallery owner from Paris is a friend of a client who has already bought two paintings from me, and who is very active in supporting me and trying to sell my work. And I respect and appreciate that immensely from him, that he does that for me. We live in difficult times, and I’m very fortunate to be experiencing this. I thank everyone who has supported me thus far.

  1. Keep doing what you are doing my friend, you are on the right path. Sell your paintings at a fair price and gradually increase according to how much you are selling, but do not increase too much as you might have to lower them again and that will not go well with previous sales. Reference prints, well I have only one company do prints for me and they sell them and give me a miserable commission but, well it is mostly for the US market. As far has having AI make them for you, well, AI is a tool and can give you ideas and may help you to solve problems but I would not print and sell them as is without your hand being actually on them. And selling in instalments is a good idea for sure. Just do not let buyers price your work or tell you how much they will give you. Stick with your prices. Buyers need to respect the work and the artist. Best of luck Rudi! It sounds like you are on a good path>

  4. My aunt used to work in galleries in Montreal and worked with well-known artists. We had the discussion about prints one day and while I can’t really recall all that she said, I remember her not being someone who favoured prints. I have taken the decision to not sell them. Yes, you could potentially make more money, but you risk also not selling the originals anymore.
I have recently made little mini prints on fridge magnets and such for when I go to art fairs, just for fun. But the people buying them can’t afford prints anyway.
I say keep moving forward like you are. In my opinion.

    1. Thanks for the reaction Janine, yes i will go on the way i am going now, my idea is to sell to the people who like it for a reasonable price for an original work. And that seems to work
